The Latest: Gas tax fans, critics spar over new initiative

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Latest on a proposed California gas tax initiative (all times local):

1 p.m.

Proponents of a ballot measure to repeal California's recent gas tax increase say their next proposal would ensure California has a dedicated source of revenue for road and bridge projects.

Conservative radio host Carl DeMaio said Tuesday that his proposed 2020 initiative would "will end the raid on our tax dollars by politicians."

DeMaio is behind Proposition 6, which asks voters this November to repeal the gas tax and vehicle registration fee increases that lawmakers adopted last year. His proposed 2020 initiative would earmark existing gas tax dollars and other transportation-related revenue for transportation projects. It also would halt the state's high-speed rail project.

Michael Quigley of the California Alliance of Jobs says the 2020 initiative would take money out of the state's general fund that's used for health care, higher education and public safety.

Activists seeking to repeal California's gas tax increase are proposing another ballot measure aimed at providing replacement transportation funding and nixing the state's high-speed rail project.

Supporters of Proposition 6 said Tuesday they will file a proposed initiative for the 2020 ballot that would designate existing tax revenues for transportation projects and end the state's plan to build a high-speed train.

The proposal is seen as a counterpart to this year's ballot initiative to repeal a fuel tax increase that is funding transportation projects in the state.

California passed the fuel tax increase last year. Proposition 6, which is on the November ballot, seeks to repeal it.

A message seeking comment was left for Proposition 6 opponents.
