A young girl's friendship with an ancient forest guardian invites readers of all ages to listen to the natural world
Nottingham, England Oct 1, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Charles Book Publishing is pleased to announce the release of Whispers of the Pine Spirit by Jeannie Brooks, an enchanting fantasy novel subtitled A Magical Journey of Friendship and Discovery in the Heart of the Forest. The book is available in paperback, hardcover, and ebook editions.
At the edge of a quiet village, where elders tell fireside tales of spirits that guard the woods, lies a forest that is both familiar and mysterious. Elara, a girl whose curiosity is as wide as the sky, steps beyond the end of the village road and into that forest, where she meets the Pine Spirit: an elusive, ethereal guardian whose voice travels on the wind. Across fifteen chapters, the two explore moss-covered paths, singing streams, and the forest's hidden heart, building a bond of trust through mystery and challenge.
But the harmony does not last. The birdsong fades, the moss turns grey, and a Dark Presence, a darkness born of fear and neglect, begins to spread through the woods. To help heal the forest, Elara must find courage she didn't know she had and learn that friendship between the most unlikely companions can protect and restore.
Beneath its fantasy, the novel carries a gentle ecological message. As Brooks writes in the preface, the story is "an ecological message wrapped in fantasy, meant not to instruct, but to inspire." The dangers in the forest's shadows mirror the real challenges nature faces today, offered through wonder rather than lecture.
Written for young readers and the grown-ups who read alongside them, Whispers of the Pine Spirit explores themes of friendship, courage in the face of fear, balance between growth and preservation, and respect for every living thing. Its rich sensory prose and shifting pace, sometimes calm and reflective, sometimes urgent and thrilling, are designed to mirror the living breath of the forest itself.
About the Author
Jeannie Brooks grew up in a farming community in the countryside, where she developed a lifelong passion for the environment, wildlife, and conservation. In her twenties, she purchased a Scottish Highland estate and dedicated herself to large-scale reforestation, replanting the land so that deer and native species could reclaim their natural habitats. The project earned her the honorary title of Laird, which she fondly acknowledges, even if she rarely uses it. In her spare time, she enjoys walking woodland trails, listening to birdsong, and watching new wildlife flourish across the estate. Those experiences inspired Whispers of the Pine Spirit, a peaceful, imaginative escape that quietly encourages readers to care for the natural world.
