POTENTIAL RISKS OF CHATGPT-MAKER’S WORLDCOIN

Aug 30, 2023

THESE ARE THE REAL CONCERNS WITH WORLDCOIN

United States Minor Outlying Islands - August 30, 2023

“This article will describe Worldcoin and address the potential risks that might occur if governments and people start using it.”

WHAT IS WORLDCOIN?

WorldCoin, built by Tools for Humanity, is known as an open-source system that was created to help provide the general public access to the global economy. It is mainly designed to be decentralized. The startup promises the supervision and decisions of this protocol will be in the hands of the community users.

There are a few tools developed by the people and organizations supporting Worldcoin that help it achieve its purpose:

  • WORLD ID

A privacy preserving digital identity provided to each user. It is designed to help solve important identity-based challenges and proving individual's unique person hood

  • WORLDCOIN TOKEN

This is the first token to be globally and freely distributed to the people for utility and future governance for them being a unique individual.

  • WORLD APP

This is a fully self-custodial app that helps enable payments, purchases and transfers globally using the Worldcoin token, digital assets and traditional currencies

The rise of Cryptocurrencies has sparked apprehension across the globe one such cryptocurrency has gained attention known as “Worldcoin”. Worldcoin is referred to as a revolutionary digital currency with a lot of benefits for financial inclusions and cross-border transactions. However, a closer view at Worldcoin reveals some of its disadvantages regarding privacy, security and its impact on economically unstable countries.

POTENTIAL RISKS OF SIGNING UP FOR WORLDCOIN

“Uncertainty surrounds how Worldcoin’s mechanism might pave the path for an AI-based universal basic income.”

  • LOSS OF DATA PRIVACY AND SECURITY

Worldcoin’s blockchain technology raises concerns about the user's privacy despite the promise of anonymity. Unlike traditional financial systems which are mostly a subject to regulatory oversight, the pseudonymous aspect of cryptocurrencies like Worldcoin can help initiate illicit activities such as Money laundering, tax evasion and funding of criminal enterprises.

Like many other cryptocurrencies, Worldoin relies on blockchain technology for safe and secure transactions. Events and Incidents have highlighted the suspect ability of blockchain networks to cyberattacks and hacking. The decentralized aspect of cryptocurrencies is like a hurdle for the government and the regulatory bodies as they have a hard time monitoring the transactions in order to prevent cyber threats efficiently. Moreover, WorldCoins capability to cater Cross-Border transactions without proper security regulations and oversight can facilitate illicit funds, challenges related to money laundering and finance terrorism.

Certik, a blockchain security firm, discovered a vulnerability in the Worldcoin protocol that allows unauthorized access for Orb operators. The vulnerability allowed anyone to bypass verification requirements and become an Orb operator without meeting necessary criteria.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Worldcoin’ s mechanism of consensus proof of work is similar to that of bitcoin as it demands substantial power and energy consumption. This contributes to the ongoing concerns regarding the environmental footmark of cryptocurrencies particularly in a world struggling for sustainable prices in order to have an affordable lifestyle.

Furthermore, the analysis of WorldCoin casts a discerning eye on the repercussions of WorldCoins prefiltration in economically unstable nations especially in developing countries.

  • INFLUENCE ON DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The Developing states have vulnerable economies, and the populace lacks adequate education. They are more susceptible to be duped and getting involved. Back in December of 2021, Iyus Ruswandi, a 35-year-old furniture maker in Gunungguruh, Indonesia, attended a “social assistance giveaway” at a local islamic elementary school, which was held by Worldcoin representatives. They were collecting biometric data from villagers, offering free cash, Airpods and promises of future wealth. Village officials were also represented to maintain order. Worldcoin representatives visited villages across West Java, Indonesia as well as college campuses, metro stops, markets and urban centers in two dozen countries, most of them in the developing countries. However, they did not provide much information on their true intentions. Rather than understanding what Worldcoin is, most people signed up for free stuff, according to MTI’s report.

WorldCoin promises to provide financial involvements and regulate cross-border transactions. These measures should be taken by the government as without proper regulations and security measures these countries could face extreme money laundering and other financial crimes leading to financial instability.

Besides, the quick gains using cryptocurrency investments are capable of enticing vulnerable populations of developing countries leading to widespread financial instability and loss. This marks the immediate need of the government to take charge and impose comprehensive and regulatory frameworks.

REGULATIONS ARE NEEDED

A cryptocurrency-based universal basic income with a fair distribution is what Worldcoin advertises, but all it has accomplished thus far is use the bodies of the underprivileged to create a biometric database. Despite Kenya being the first nation to start the initiative, this month the Kenyan government ordered Worldcoin to halt adding new users because of data protection concerns. Authorities must have discovered something criminal throughout their inquiry.

As per these concerns the governments of developing nations must take measures to regulate the use of Worldcoin and other cryptocurrencies in order to overcome the major issues like, money laundering and other financial crimes leading to financial instability. To overcome the potential threats of WorldCoin the government can introduce stringent anti money laundering and cyber security protocols. These security measures can help monitor the transactions and help in preventing illicit activities and provide security to the investor and public.
