HBO Max releases surprise Halloween special for IT: Welcome to Derry
The episode, titled “A Story of Derry,” explores events hundreds of years before Pennywise. A second season is also in development.
HBO Max released an unannounced IT: Welcome to Derry special on October 31, bringing the series back for Halloween after its second season had been confirmed months earlier. The episode, “A Story of Derry,” is available on the streaming service.
The streamer described the special on Instagram as an exploration of IT’s origins in Derry. Its official synopsis follows three young people who enter the Western Wood and encounter an ancient spirit, hundreds of years before Pennywise. Cast members returning from season one include Kimberly Guerrero, Kiawentiio, Morningstar Angeline and Isabel Deroy-Olson. Zahn McClarnon also appears.
The second season is set in 1935, during the Great Depression. Its story centers on the massacre of the Bradley Gang, bank robbers who arrive in Derry to purchase ammunition and encounter horror.
Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane told Deadline in October that the next season would likely arrive in late 2027 or in 2028. He said scriptwriting was about halfway complete, a production schedule was in place and Andy Muschietti was casting.
