HBO request helped shape Larry and Marian’s intimacy in The Gilded Age

Co-showrunner Sonja Warfield said research into an 1885 tropical storm helped provide the circumstances for the characters’ hotel encounter.

A request from HBO to advance Larry and Marian’s relationship helped bring about their premarital sex scene in The Gilded Age’s Season 4 opener, co-showrunner Sonja Warfield told Deadline. The episode shows the characters, played by Harry Richardson and Louisa Jacobson, spending a night together at a hotel.

Warfield said she had previously raised the possibility with creator Julian Fellowes, who explained that the couple’s chaperoned lives would prevent such an encounter. HBO’s request prompted the team to revisit the idea and find circumstances that would leave them alone.

Her proposed scenario involved a broken carriage wheel and weather severe enough to prevent the pair from finding another cab. Warfield said she consulted Dr. Dunbar, whose research identified a tropical storm in 1885.

Jacobson said Marian’s response the following morning was important to her storyline throughout the season. She described the acting challenge as balancing the character’s happiness with the shame and potential social exclusion she feared, emphasizing that the consequences for a woman in that setting were greater than those for a man.
