Jamie Lee Curtis says she helped create NBC comedy Newlyweds after being unable to find the sitcom work she wanted. She co-created the series with Gail Lerner and serves as an executive producer, while also playing a recurring character.

Speaking to People, Curtis said developing the comedy had provided her with a job she could not otherwise get. She had previously told TV Insider that she kept asking her agents for a sitcom role after her earlier work on Anything But Love in the early ’90s.

Curtis traced the idea to a conversation in 2019 with a driver in New York. His account of divorce and remarriage prompted her to imagine a sitcom centered on people marrying on impulse in their 60s and 70s, she told People.

Married actors Téa Leoni and Tim Daly portray Jeanie and James, who marry after a brief courtship and must adapt to one another’s friends and families. Curtis plays James’ former wife, Claudia. The series launched Oct. 23 on NBC, where episodes air Fridays before becoming available on Peacock the next day.
