Joey King will lead two science-fiction comedies, joining LaKeith Stanfield in Safe Space and James McAvoy and Juno Temple in Almost You. The projects pair stories about an alien romance and an artificial intelligence replica of a deceased sibling.

Matt Lipsey is directing Almost You, which is already filming in Glasgow. According to the synopsis reported by Variety, robotics engineer Phoebe struggles with the death of her younger sister, Edie. She breaks her employer’s protocols to build an AI version of Edie using messages, videos and social media material. The replica initially offers comfort before forcing Phoebe to question whether she should have brought her sister back.

Safe Space, directed by Gillian Wallace Horvat, casts King as a scientist named Sherrie. Variety’s synopsis describes her leaving an unhealthy relationship with a colleague and becoming involved with an alien, played by Stanfield, in a relationship that proves even more toxic.

Financing for Safe Space is still being arranged, and additional casting is in progress. Filming is expected to start in the U.S. during the second quarter of 2027.
