Keanu Reeves is set to take a starring role in Maelstrom, a Netflix action movie that Alan Ritchson has left, Deadline reported. No reason was given for the departure of Ritchson, who also stars in Amazon’s Reacher.

The project comes from Jaume Collet-Serra, whose films include Carry-On, Non-Stop and The Shallows. Its story centers on a federal marshal protecting the fiancée of a weapons dealer who has become a witness.

During a hurricane, the marshal must keep her safe overnight as the storm severs communications and prevents reinforcements from reaching them. The dealer’s men attack the safe house where they are sheltering.

Deadline reported that the project’s development stretches back to 1993, when it began at Warner Bros. as a speculative script. The late Gregory Fitzpatrick wrote the initial version; Mark Bianculli wrote the current draft.

Reeves also has the science-fiction movie Shiver and The Entertainment System is Down in the works.
