Creator and showrunner Rob Doherty has outlined possible directions for a third season of ABC’s “R.J. Decker,” though the series has not been officially renewed. His comments to TV Insider followed the crime drama’s October 27 second-season finale, which left characters facing an unresolved threat.

Doherty said the writers have considered both a quick resolution and a longer storyline involving Jessica. The finale identified her as the killer of Bobby, a former police colleague of Mel, played by Bevin Bru. After losing custody of her daughter, Jessica threatened Mel’s wife, Catherine, and their daughter, Sofia.

Other possibilities include returning to R.J.’s complicated romantic ties with Emi, played by Jaina Lee Ortiz, and Trudy, played by Shantel VanSanten. Doherty also hopes Beau Bridges could return as Reggie Decker, R.J.’s father, following his second-season appearance.

Doherty said he would welcome a longer season to give supporting characters more attention, including Catherine, Wish and Emi. He expressed confidence in his relationships with ABC and 20th Century Television while emphasizing that the team wants to be prepared for another season.

Scott Speedman stars as R.J., a former newspaper photographer and ex-con who becomes a private investigator in South Florida. Hulu carries all seven episodes from the second season.
