French film director Romain Gavras has criticized AI-generated versions of the music video he directed for GENER8ION and Yung Lean’s “Storm,” telling Vulture that the imitations diminished the work of those involved.

Gavras said AI companies had approached him about licensing the video, but he turned them down. According to Vulture, many of the imitations used Genjutsu, a tool that AI video company Higgsfield released in late August.

His daughter introduced him to the trend by showing him a version featuring dogs, Gavras said. He initially found it cute, but his reaction changed as versions appeared featuring figures including Elon Musk, Kim Jong-un, Hitler and Jeffrey Epstein.

The original places Yung Lean, smoking a cigarette, amid 66 boys performing choreography. The Swedish rapper and singer recreated the video at the VMAs for his US television debut. Gavras argued that the AI versions failed to reproduce Yung Lean’s presence or the human imperfections that distinguish the original performance.
