Taika Waititi puts planned Star Wars film on hold
The filmmaker said he and screenwriter Tony McNamara are pursuing another project, but he left open the possibility of returning to Star Wars.

Taika Waititi has paused development of his planned Star Wars film, telling Inverse that he and screenwriter Tony McNamara are turning their attention to another project. The film was announced in May 2020, with Waititi attached to write and direct.
Waititi discussed the change while promoting Klara and the Sun. He declined to provide details about his new collaboration with McNamara after consulting his publicist, and said he was trying to make about four other movies.
The pause has not been announced as a permanent cancellation. Waititi left a possible return open, without saying whether or when work would resume. Krysty Wilson-Cairns was his initial screenplay collaborator; McNamara joined the writing process later.
Waititi's previous Star Wars work includes directing an episode of The Mandalorian and providing the voice of IG-11, a droid. His next film, Klara and the Sun, features Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams and is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 23.
