Tom Hanks returned to Saturday Night Live as David S Pumpkins in the October 31 cold open, appearing alongside Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan. The 70-year-old actor’s unannounced appearance brought back the Halloween character he first portrayed in October 2016.

The opening sketch followed Grace Reiter, a new cast member, and Jeremy Culhane as they boarded a ride at “Fright Nights.” Hanks appeared roughly a minute into the segment as one of the figures the pair encountered along the way.

The ride also provided a setting for political parody. James Austin Johnson played President Donald Trump, while Saidah Belo-Osagie portrayed Nicki Minaj. Johnson’s dialogue included a comparison between Trump and Pumpkins.

Day, Moynihan and Streeter Seidell created Pumpkins for a Halloween sketch in 2016. Hanks later revisited the role in 2022, appearing during SNL’s season 48 in an episode hosted by Jack Harlow.
