Zane Phillips is making his Broadway debut as The Narrator (El Gallo) in Second Stage Theater’s production of The Fantasticks. Newly released production photographs feature the 32-year-old actor in the musical, which is scheduled to open officially on November 16 after preview performances.
The production marks the musical’s first Broadway staging and is set for a limited engagement of 15 weeks at the Hayes Theater. This version centers on two young men whose mothers scheme to bring them together romantically. The original story centered on a boy and a girl and their fathers.
Maxim Chlumecky plays Matt, with Nathan Levy as Lewis. Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer portrays Matt’s mother, Mildred Hucklebee, while Ruthie Ann Miles plays Lewis’ mother, Bessie Mae Bellomy. The cast also includes Kevin Del Aguila as Mortimer, David Patrick Kelly as Henry and Ahmad Simmons as The Mute.
Phillips’ screen credits include the 2022 Hulu film Fire Island and the television shows Loot, The Comeback, Glamorous and Mid-Century Modern. His theater experience includes playing Rolf in a national tour of The Sound of Music. The Fantasticks first opened off-Broadway in 1960, running for 42 years before closing in 2002. A subsequent off-Broadway revival ran from 2006 to 2017.
