Junior Boys will release The Gore through City Slang on February 12. The Canadian duo, Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, have also shared “Underneath The Moon,” the first single from the record.

The Gore follows 2022’s Waiting Game and was conceived as a companion to that album, with a deliberately rougher, noisier sound. Its development followed the deaths of Greenspan’s father and a close childhood friend, drawing on grief as well as an interest in horror, science fiction and experimental cinema.

Greenspan said the 2022 horror film Skinamarink strongly influenced “Underneath The Moon.” He used tape loops on an old Tascam machine to recreate some of the film’s effects and pay tribute to the fleeting qualities of analog recording.

Before the album comes out, the duo will hold three events pairing a screening of Michael Snow’s experimental film Wavelength from 1967 with a complete playback of The Gore, original visualizers and a question-and-answer session with Greenspan:

  • January 27: Public Records in Brooklyn, NY.
  • January 30: The Beacon Cinema in Seattle, WA.
  • February 3: Standard Time in Toronto, ON.
