NBC develops basketball-focused ‘Coach’ reboot with Ty Burrell
Burrell is attached to executive produce and is expected to star if the comedy advances, but NBC has not placed a series order.

Ty Burrell is set to executive produce a planned NBC reboot of Coach and is expected to star should it move ahead, TheWrap reported. The project remains in development, without a series order, confirmed premiere date or episode count.
Basketball would replace college football as the comedy’s central sport. Its story follows a celebrated coach back to his former school in Minnesota, where he seeks to rebuild the basketball program and renew ties with the community. The production would use a single-camera format instead of its predecessor’s multicamera setup.
Brothers Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, whose work includes Peacock’s Mr. Throwback, are writing the reboot and will also be executive producers with Burrell. There have been no further casting announcements.
Craig T. Nelson portrayed college football coach Hayden Fox in the original sitcom, which ran on ABC from 1989 to 1997 across nine seasons. No participation has been confirmed for Nelson or other surviving cast members. NBC ordered a sequel in 2015 that was intended to bring Nelson back, but canceled it before it aired.
Burrell previously played Phil Dunphy in Modern Family, winning two Emmy Awards for the role. That sitcom concluded in 2020 after 11 seasons.
