Paapa Essiedu discusses backlash over playing Snape
The actor said the production team had supported him and described the collaborative process behind his character’s appearance.

Paapa Essiedu said he understood the range of reactions his portrayal of Professor Severus Snape could attract when he joined HBO’s new Harry Potter series. He discussed the criticism with Variety at the 2026 TIME100 Next Gala on October 29.
The English actor, 36, has faced racially charged death threats over the casting. He said his priority was his work and described receiving support from the production team. He also said the encouragement, good wishes and excitement expressed about the project had impressed him.
Some fans have objected to Essiedu taking the role previously played by Alan Rickman in the films. Promotional images prompted further criticism of his character’s shoulder-length dreadlocks, leather jacket and oversized cape. Essiedu said Snape’s appearance reflects both his personality and how he wants others to perceive him, with the costume department helping develop the look.
Essiedu expressed pride in the material he had seen and praised the work of those involved. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is scheduled for a December 25 debut on HBO Max.
