Keanu Reeves will reprise his John Wick role in an animated prequel from Lionsgate, with a story centered on the mission that allows the assassin to leave his obligations behind. The actor, 62, is returning as the studio develops other projects in the franchise.

According to Variety, the prequel follows Wick’s Impossible Task: eliminating every rival during a single night. Completing the mission would release him from his duties to the High Table and allow him to be with Helen, the woman he loves.

Variety reported that Shannon Tindle will direct, working from a script by Ryan and Kaz Firpo. Tindle’s previous work includes Kubo and the Two Strings and Ultraman: Rising.

Lionsgate is also developing a fifth John Wick film and a separate adventure centered on Caine, the assassin portrayed by Donnie Yen. The franchise has earned more than US$1 billion at the worldwide box office.
