The planned West Texas spinoff of Grey’s Anatomy is now expected to premiere in 2027-2028 rather than the previously announced 2026-2027 television season, according to Deadline. The delay follows efforts to obtain a California tax credit and a switch to filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Shondaland’s Betsy Beers said ABC had sought California tax credits for the project but was turned down because the production was judged not to provide enough jobs. She said the company was subsequently told new shows would not have another opportunity to apply, although returning productions could.

Beers said attempts to keep production in California had cost time, money and personnel. She also said proximity to Grey’s Anatomy was important because Meg Marinis would be running both shows.

Shonda Rhimes and Marinis are leading the spinoff, with Ellen Pompeo attached as an executive producer. The project is reportedly still in pre-production.
