North Carolina band Superchunk have released Wintry Mix, a surprise EP on Merge that pairs one original with four cover songs. Winter provides the theme for all five tracks, with selections ranging from a Christmas hit to songs from the Magnetic Fields and Galaxie 500.

The EP opens with the new Superchunk song “Shortest Day Of The Year,” which features sleigh bells. The band's take on Wham!'s 1984 song “Last Christmas” is also included.

Two of the covers draw on 50 Song Memoir, the Magnetic Fields' 2017 concept album: “The Blizzard Of '78” and “Have You Seen It In The Snow.” The Magnetic Fields were previously labelmates of Superchunk at Merge.

The remaining cover is “Snowstorm,” originally from Galaxie 500's 1989 album On Fire. Wintry Mix is available now.
