The Flaming Lips have set January 22 for the release of The Teardrop Throbs, their follow-up to American Head from 2020. The band has also released its lead single, “God Will Control The Werewolves.”

Jack White's Third Man Records will issue the album, ending a run of Warner releases stretching back to the period after In A Priest Driven Ambulance in 1990. It will also be the group's first album without Steven Drozd since Hit To Death In The Future Head in 1992.

Drozd, who joined as a drummer in 1991 and became a multi-instrumentalist, departed in 2024. Frontman Wayne Coyne has said Drozd quit, while Drozd has said he was fired after leaving for addiction treatment. Drozd is working on a solo debut.

Coyne, Matthew Kirksey, Derek Brown and Taylor Johnson share songwriting credits on the single. Johnson co-produced the album alongside Dave Fridmann and Scott Booker, with Jon Fridmann and Mike Fridmann contributing additional production.

Coyne said the lyrics grew out of playing hide-and-seek with his sons, Bloom and Rex, as darkness fell. When Bloom asked whether werewolves would get them, Coyne reassured him that God would keep the creatures under control while they played.

The tracklist includes “Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell Part Two.” The band also listed paired shows in Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and London between January and April.
